What skills and traits do many successful restaurant owners have? That’s what I set forth to find out and narrowed it down to 6 that are crucial to running a successful restaurant business…

We all know it. The restaurant and food business isn’t for everyone. The stereotypes of LONG HOURS, LOW MARGINS, HIGH STRESS, etc etc. are true in most cases. It is one of the most difficult industries out there. There are a lot of margins for error, which end up killing so many restaurants each year.

So what exactly do you need to know or be skillful at to open a successful restaurant? My survey with a bunch of restaurant owners gave me some great insight and a pattern I see amongst them. Many of the traits I found are true and I think a big component in what makes a thriving restaurant. Traits like being good at managing people, being good with numbers, solving problems, operations – all of them are SOOOO important. As a food and beverage business owner, these qualities are what helped me grow my ice cream shop into an international chain. It helped our business survive the seasonal issues and it helped us build a team that was amazing.

I also have to say that these traits and skills are not just necessary in the restaurant business, but also in other industries and small businesses. They all matter. And if you don’t possess one or a few, that is when you need to find someone who does have those skills to complement you. For instance, I was extremely lucky to have business partners who were master of operations. They were so important when we were franchising our business.
