Is consulting a good career move?
Counseling is a time-consuming task. Joining a consulting firm is one of the fastest and most effective ways to build an extensive and valuable network. On the one hand, you’ll be working with multiple customers and stakeholders throughout your various projects. In this way, you can build relationships between numerous organizations (usually with high-level employees), which can result in job offers, other consulting assignments, or even mentorships.
After working in various industries, I wanted to find a place where I could quickly develop and solve business problems at various levels. First, I took time to find myself. I spent a year reading and talking to people from all backgrounds, from lawyers and crisis managers to psychologists. One day I met a guy who was applying to McKinsey and I was inspired by his story.
I realized that I also wanted to become a consultant to help managers overcome their challenges. Answer them and you’ll have at least a general idea of whether counseling is the right choice for you. This results in a strict pyramid structure for most top consulting firms — the higher up, the fewer employees there are. This is the most typical path, for people who know from a young age that they want to go into counseling.
With other consulting firms, you can probably expect a test before you apply or while you apply. If you don’t start your career with the right internship, you won’t have a chance to gain a foothold in the industry. In the typical presentation of consulting or in the “Big Four” companies, consultants are employed on a project for three to six months or so. Consulting as a profession offers an excellent opportunity to earn more than your colleagues in other industries.
Even if you are certain of a particular industry, consulting offers you the opportunity to get to know different corporate cultures and get to know people within the company. It can be a big step in choosing a place where you can be successful in your next career move. Consultants are also expected to stay one step ahead of trends. So you’re not only reading about key macro trends in the industry or the impact on your customers, but you’ll also question and discuss these trends with other people you work with. At the highest level, a consultant is really just someone who is an expert in something and helps other people, whether it’s a consultant helping an individual or helping an organization.
